Known as the “green heart of Italy”, Umbria has an abundance of lush, green hills and small, hilltop towns. Surrounded by Tuscany and Le Marche, it is no wonder that Umbrian wines have been somewhat overshadowed in the past. Umbria produces some of the most powerfully-flavoured red wines in the world, but up until now, Umbra has been mostly known for its white wines, thanks to Orvieto DOC. Characterised by its chalky mineral qualities from the calcium-rich tufaceous soils, Orvieto has long been one of the most successful Italian white wines outside of Italy.
However, a region that is home to such richly-flavoured cuisine as Umbria, from meats flavoured with an abundance of locally grown fresh herbs and mushrooms, to dense green olive oil, needs wines that can match its food in flavour and weight. Montefalco Sagrantino is one of only two DOCG wines in Umbria, and this local variety has tannins to rival those of Nebbiolo and Aglianico. The wines are inky purple, heavy, rich and decidedly earthy. This great and fascinating wine is sadly in very short supply as Sagrantino is currently only grown by 25 producers. Slightly lighter, (but still very hearty!) reds of note are also made in the area under the denomination Montefalco Rosso DOC. These wines are made predominantly from Sangiovese and blended with other local varieties such as Montepulciano and, if it is grown, Sagrantino.
The principal local white variety, Grechetto, is today making a name for itself, and gives wines with delicate fruity aromas and moderate acidity. Some great dessert wines are also made from air-dried Grechetto grapes, but are rarely exported out of the region.
