

Fattoria il Lago
In the hills of the Chianti Rufina region of Tuscany, near the town of Dicomano, lies Fattoria Il Lago, a farm owned and run by the Spagnoli family since they acquired it in 1962.
The farm itself has 380 hectares of land, but only 21 hectares are dedicated to the cultivation of grapes. The antique wine press, dating back to 1806, that sits in the main reception, is testimony to the farm’s viticultural history, but it is the Spagnoli family who are responsible for the stunning quality of the wines produced today.
They have made put great emphasis and investment into renewing and expanding the vineyard and replanting the Sangiovese grape vines. This, coupled with the collaboration of Fabrizio Moltard, a sought-after Tuscan oenologist, has allowed Fattoria Il Lago to carve a reputation as innovators in the wine world. As well as producing multiple award-winning traditional Chianti Rufina DOCG and Riserva, they are the only vineyard in Chianti Rufina, and indeed all of Tuscany, to produce a declassified wine (IGT) made from air-dried Sangiovese grapes. They are also experimenting with Pinot Nero and Syrah; the first vintages are already winning awards in Italy and will be available in the UK in 2011.
