Gianfranco Fino
The journey for Gianfranco Fino began in 2004 when his search for a vineyard with old vines came to an end. He purchased a very small plot of 1.2 hectares with 50 year old bush-trained vines. In 2006 two more small plots were added, both with 40 year-old bush-trained vines that were going to be uprooted. Today the estate totals a mere 7 hectares of Primitivo and 1 hectare of Negroamaro vines. The objective from the beginning had been to obtain extreme quality, with low yields, short pruning and grape thinning in spring.
Gianfranco’s work was recognised right from the beginning when “Es”, the Primitivo, was selected by Gigi Brozzoni for and “author” tasting. Made from grapes slightly dried on the vine, some loved it, some hated it. From then on the wine has gone from strength to strength and Gianfranco is now recognised as one of Italy’s leading winemakers, with the wines achieving three red glasses in Gambero Rosso and 95 points in Veronelli’s guide and himself being named winemaker of the year in 2010. Both Es and the Negroamaro “Jo” are available in extremely limited quantities, and pre-order of “Jo” is particularly advised.
