A 20 hectare farm owned and run by brothers Antonio and Cesare Gallegati. Both studied university degrees in Agricultural Science, and then took over their father’s estate in 1990. The vineyards are situated in Faenza, a small city of Roman origin made famous by its ceramics.
Sangiovese is the principal grape that Gallegati cultivate, which, despite being overshadowed by its Tuscan counterpart, here gives wines of great power and purity. “Sanzvès”, as it is known in the local dialect, has been cultivated in this region for centuries, and innovations in winemaking techniques and equipment over the last thirty years has meant that Emilia Romagna is now producing some of the richest, most powerful pure Sangiovese wines in the world, to rival those of Brunello. At Gallegati they favour small French barrique ageing to give even greater structure to the wine, and they have subsequently won many awards, including the coveted “tre bicchiere” for a number of vintages of their Corallo Nero, and “emerging winery of the year” in 2010 (Gambero Rosso).
